Children as leaders
We use a variety of vehicles through which to give children a say in how their school is run.
School Council
One of the ways that we encourage and promote the ‘pupil voice’ is through the School Council. Two elected children represent each class from Year 2 to Year 6 and meet regularly with a designated member of staff to discuss areas of school life which the children feel could be improved. Areas they have influenced include anti-bullying promotions, improvements for the playground, dining room behaviour and the school catering. They are also regularly involved in fund-raising. The School Council also meets with governors and prospective parents to share their views and ideas about school development.
The School Council's most recent initiative was to collect and organise donations of small gifts which were packed into shoeboxes to be delivered to children in need who would not otherwise receive a Christmas present.
Other groups
Children are invited (or volunteer) to take other leadership roles, such as Play Leaders who organise play time activities for younger children, Friendship Ambassadors and Language Ambassadors.
A key forum in which children enjoy taking part is the Food Council where children become Food Councillor are able to raise issues and discuss ways that the school lunches can be improved.
